The summer day my favorite poet died I took note of the different hours and looked life in the eye — I didn’t lose my composure over the leaky freezer or the dogs digging holes in the yard, actually in fact those stresses emboldened me as I rode off on my bike and shouted to my neighbor to let me know who wins the game with plans to throw my amulet in the river along the way. Who needs magic or hope when I’ve vowed to stop selling my attention and reverse the trend of trees being worth more dead than alive, first by memorizing the smell of fireworks.
